They got married in 1971, and he legally adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner, during their relationship. After Reiner and Marshall divorced, he went on to have three more children, Jake, Nick, and Romy, with his second wife, Michele Singer, whom he married in 1989.

Though Reiner didn't speak often about his personal life, he was not shy about admitting that it inspired his work. "All the films I've done have some kind of personal connection with something that I've been through," he told 60 Minutes in a 1994 interview. "If you're working from some place honest, you're always going to tap into your experience."

"I went to school with the Jackson kids, Stevie Wonder’s sister, a bunch of different people who had an interesting home life," she told the Hollywood Sentinel about her upbringing.

Eventually, Tracy pursued acting herself, appearing in films like When Harry Met Sally, A League of Their Own, and Apollo 13. “I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” he told People in 2016. “I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”

On Father’s Day in 2021, she posted a tribute calling him “the man who I could talk to forever and also the man who I can sit in silence with and be perfectly content."

One week before her parents' death, she posted a Thanksgiving Instagram saying how "thankful" she was for her "family" alongside photos of them enjoying a beachside vacation together.

People reported that Romy found her parents in their home after they were killed.
