Tony Romo on Leave from CBS Sports ‘Until Further Notice’ After Arrest for Alleged OWI

Tony Romo will be away from his role as an analyst at CBS Sports following his arrest for an alleged OWI on July 23

The network said Romo is “on leave” and that he will remain so “until further notice” in a statement on July 31

Romo will next appear in court on Sept. 21

Tony Romo will be away from CBS for an indefinite amount of time after he was arrested for an alleged OWI.

In a statement on Friday, July 31, the network said, “Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice. JJ Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as CBS Sports’ lead NFL team during Tony Romo’s absence.”

Romo joined CBS as an analyst in April 2017.

The former NFL quarterback, 46, was arrested on July 23 after being stopped by Milwaukee police, who said he was unable to complete standard field sobriety tests after being pulled over near a high-rise bridge on southbound I-43, WISN 12 News and WTMJ reported at the time.

He was taken into custody for alleged OWI [operating a vehicle while intoxicated] and later released.

Bodycam footage of the arrest was made public by NBC 5 DFW and WFAA on Tuesday, July 28 and showed Romo telling the officer he was coming from “the golf course” and on his way to “meet grandma and grandpa” before being asked to participate in field sobriety tests.

The deputy later asked Romo, “How many drinks have you had?” He responded, “Zero,” and explained he was playing at an amateur golf event.

The deputy then asked Romo to take a field sobriety test. Romo said, “I’m going to call my lawyer … if that’s okay.” The deputy then repeatedly asked Romo to step out of the vehicle as he responded, “I’m not allowed to call my lawyer?”

When asked by the officer if he would be willing to take a PBT (preliminary breath test), Romo responded, “Oh no, we’re not doing that. I’ve already heard from all the lawyers, ‘Don’t ever do that,’” in the footage.

According to the outlets, Romo’s next appearance in court is scheduled for Sept. 21.
