Tom Cruise’s Digger is heading toward becoming one of his biggest box office flops, according to Box Office Mojo. The Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film earned just $8 million domestically and $20 million worldwide during its opening weekend. The film opened across more than 3,300 theaters in North America and placed fifth at the box office. Experts noted a film of this size needed to clear $40 million in its debut to justify its reported $160 million to $180 million budget.
The opening marked the lowest debut for a Cruise-led film in 19 years, since Lions for Lambs earned $6.7 million in 2007. TheWrap reported that Digger is projected to lose a staggering $250 million by the end of its run, even with post-theatrical revenue. The production budget ballooned from an initial $125 million greenlight to between $160 million and $180 million after production ran over schedule. Warner Bros. also spent roughly $100 million on marketing, pushing the break-even point to an estimated $300 million.

Cruise holds a first-dollar gross deal on the film, so he earns a percentage of revenues before the studio recoups any costs. Film consultant David A. Gross of Franchise Re pointed out that black comedies are typically small films, and Digger was not made as one. Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted that Cruise’s star power did not automatically turn Digger into a blockbuster, nor did the filmmakers design it as one.
Digger follows Cruise’s recent string of major theatrical successes, including Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in 2025. The film’s poor performance adds to a difficult 2025for Warner Bros., which has failed to gross more than $100 million domestically with any of its releases this year. Digger also stands as Warner Bros.’ final release as a standalone studio before the Paramount Skydance acquisition takes effect. General audiences gave the film a C+ CinemaScore, which does not suggest strong word-of-mouth potential going forward.
