Carson Daly revealed he stopped wearing a fake Masters green jacket after being contacted by the tournament

Masters winners can only take the real green jacket off-site for one year and must follow strict guidelines

The jacket cannot appear publicly without Augusta National's approval and has a detailed dress code for wearers

The green jacket may be one of golf's most iconic prizes, but as Carson Daly recently learned, there are strict rules about who can wear it and when.

During a segment on Today on Thursday, April 9, Daly, 52, revealed to his co-hosts that even wearing a replica of the coveted The Masters Tournament jacket can cross a line.

“I miss your… you used to have the most wonderful, fake green Masters jacket you got from Amazon,” Savannah Guthrie, 54, said to Daly on air.

“I know, it was a good fake,” Daly replied.

“And then the Masters called and said, ‘No,' ” Guthrie continued.

“And I listened and took it off immediately,” Daly said, as Craig Melvin chimed in, “Thank you.”

“That's why you guys are [in] off-green,” Guthrie added.

“Yeah, whatever they say,” Daly responded.

Still, Daly admitted he hasn't completely retired the look.

“But you wear it at home, don't you?” Guthrie asked.

“I do wear it at home. I know it'll be on at 10:31 this morning when defending champion Rory McIlroy tees off today with Cam Young, who's my horse. And also there's another amateur player in that group as well. So I'll be in it all day today. I should have another one for the afternoon wave. I'm gonna order another one,” Daly said.

“What about PJs? Jammies?” Guthrie joked.

“I've got Scotty and Gary Woodland going at 12:44, so I'm probably going to have to swap it out. Thank you guys, you helped me out,” Daly added.

Daly, an avid golfer, has been known to lean into the look.

In April 2022, he shared a photo on Instagram of himself wearing a green jacket alongside his Today co-hosts, joking in the caption, “So honored to be presented with the #Masters (rented) #GreenJacket by last yrs champ @craigmelvinnbc with my @todayshow family in attendance. I will cherish it until I have to return it on Monday.”

It remains unclear whether the jacket in the post was an official one or a replica.

While Daly's experience offers a glimpse into how closely the Masters protects its image, even the tournament's winners are bound by strict rules when it comes to the real jacket.

Speaking on Stick to Football in January, professional golfer and winner of the 2025 Masters Tournament Rory McIlroy, 36, told hosts — former soccer players Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jill Scott — that even he isn't free to wear the sport's most prestigious garment wherever he likes.

Asked where he keeps it, McIlroy said, “Just in my wardrobe.”

He quickly clarified that the privilege is temporary.

“No, so you've gotta bring it back,” he said. “The only person that's allowed to bring the green jacket off the premises is the champion for a year. It then stays in the club, it stays in your locker.”

McIlroy added that players must follow strict guidelines — even signing a legal document before taking the jacket off-site.

“There's do's and don'ts with it,” he said. “You have to wear a certain shirt, a club tie, and certain trousers… only dress shoes, you can't wear trainers.”

And the rules don't stop there.

Across social media, creators have also chimed in about the jacket's strict guidelines. Golf account @makeshiftgolf noted in a podcast video that the jacket can't make a public appearance without approval from Augusta National.

“You can't be photographed with the jacket while having alcohol,” one of the account's creators Zach Misischia said in the clip. “You can't have a beer, you can't have a mixed drink, you can't have anything if you're drinking alcohol.”

They also noted that the previous year's winner places the jacket on the new champion.

Speaking to GOLF's Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz on GOLF's Subpar Podcast in April 2023, Jon Rahm, who won the Masters Tournament in 2023, echoed that sentiment.

“There's a dress code that comes with it,” Rahm said. “You learn about this quickly when you have to sign documents and things about what you are doing. Obviously, we all know the rules around Augusta National, right? And they tell you you are representing Augusta National and the jacket is Augusta National.”

“It's complicated,” Rahm added. “The jacket can't make a public appearance without [the club] knowing. They don't like to be surprised so they need to give approval for everything. I can't be photographed with the jacket and having alcohol. It just goes on and on.”
