On August 1, 1981, just after midnight, a new cable network called MTV, Music Television, went on the air for the very first time with these words by one of MTV’s creators, John Lack, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.”

followed by the opening countdown and the broadcast of the first music video,“Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles

MTV struggled in its early years; programming consisted of basic music videos that were introduced by VJs, video jockeys, for free by record companies, resulting in frequent repetition of clips.

In the ‘80s, MTV accelerated artist success through heavy visual rotation, such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Duran Duran

By the mid ‘80s, MTV was focusing on motion pictures and commercials. Artists and production companies started getting interested in being on MTV, which made them focus on creating more interesting videos.

After music videos, MTV gave us some unforgettable reality series, mainly targeting teenagers and young adults, some of these were The Real World, launched in 1992, The Osbournes, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, Laguna Beach, My Super Sweet 16, and The Hills.

In 1985, Viacom Inc. purchased MTV Networks from Warner Communications Inc., and the shift in content was immediate. Music videos were put in blocks based on genre, and the network shifted its focus from music to youth-oriented pop culture.

By the mid ’90s, the majority of MTV’s schedule was more programs than music. In 1996, MTV Networks launched MTV2, it started with the same free-form structure as MTV, but it soon shifted to more specific programs. And by 2005, MTV2 had reality shows, celebrity coverage, and comedies.

While everything and everyone started moving to online platforms after 2006, MTV sought to secure itself as a destination for music on the Internet through its website. In 2007, MTV launched Rhapsody America as a subscription-based alternative to Apple Inc.’s iTunes service. Then in 2010 it became an independent company.

On January 1, 2026, MTV shut down several music-only channels, ending decades of 24-hour music broadcasting. The main MTV channel in the US is still working, it just shifted its focus from music videos to reality programming
