This morning, two high speed passenger trains collided near Toledo, Spain. Portions of both trains were derailed and at least 64 people are understood to have died, making the accident one of the deadliest in the country’s history.
In the wake of the tragedy, the royal house of Spain shared a message of condolence on social media, writing, “We are moved and concerned by the train accident in Urda (Toledo). We share in the sorrow of the families and loved ones of the deceased and send our affection to the injured and those affected.” They added, “Our support also goes to the emergency teams and all those working in the area to help as much as possible under these circumstances.”
Amidst the ongoing situation, King Felipe has also cancelled his previously planned schedule of events on Wednesday and Thursday. The king also announced that he had already spoken with Emiliano García-Page, the president of Castilla-La Mancha region where the crash took place, and that he is remaining apprised of new details as they emerge.

Felipe was originally scheduled to attend a concert at the National Music Auditorium in Madrid commemorating the 150th birthday of musician and composer Pablo Casals this evening. On Thursday, he was expected to attend the closing ceremony of the World Infrastructure Forum at Madrid’s Higher Technical School of Civil Engineers. As yet, no announcements have been made about the monarch’s schedule for the remainder of the week.
As of the most recent reporting, the cause of the crash was not yet clear, but it appears that one train rear-ended the other. The trains involved were operated by the companies Renfe and Iryo, according to Spain’s rail authority. This marks the second crash of trains operated by the two companies this year, following an incident in January near Adamuz, which resulted in the deaths of 46 people.
