Shakira delivered a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night, and according to the city’s mayor, a staggering 2 million people showed up to witness it — turning one of the world’s most recognizable stretches of sand into the biggest party on the planet.

The Colombian-born superstar performed a nearly 30-song set that included surprise guest appearances by Brazilian icons Anitta, Maria Bethânia, and Caetano Veloso. Yeah, it was that kind of night.

Shakira’s set kicked off around 11 p.m. — more than an hour past the scheduled slot — to fans screaming with excitement and frantic applause, while skywriting drones lit up the sky spelling out “I love you Brazil” in Portuguese. No low-key entrance here.

The moment she hit the stage, she got deeply personal with the crowd. “I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you,” she told the audience. “And now look at this. Life is magical.”

The free Brazil concert was part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran — “Women No Longer Cry” — world tour, named after her 2024 album. And the setlist didn’t disappoint. She ran through fan favorites including “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Tortura,” and “La Bicicleta,” closing out with “BZRP Music Sessions 53/66,” the track that followed her split from Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué.

She also took a moment to speak directly to women in the crowd. “Us women, every time we fall we get up a little wiser,” she said. The crowd lost it.

Shakira is now the third consecutive female artist to headline a free show at Copacabana Beach, following Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga in 2025, who set the attendance record at 2.5 million.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere wasn’t shy about celebrating the moment. “The She-Wolf made history in Rio,” he posted on social media, nodding to Shakira’s 2009 hit.

For fans who’ve loved her for decades, Saturday felt like a full-circle moment. Erica Monteiro, a 38-year-old accountant who has listened to Shakira since childhood, said ahead of the show, “For me she represents the strength of our Latino community. We’re treated as if we were inferior but in fact we have much more strength.”

The cultural connection runs deep, and there’s a reason for it. Ethnomusicologist Felipe Maia, who is pursuing a doctoral degree in popular music and digital technologies at Paris Nanterre University, said Shakira’s bond with Brazil “has a lot to do with the fact that she comes from Colombia, a country whose culture has many similarities with Brazil,” adding that Saturday’s performance “crowns the relationship she has had with Brazil for a very long time.”

Heading home after the show, fan Hellem Souza da Silva said that Shakira’s performance, much like Bad Bunny’s concerts in São Paulo in February, helped consolidate Brazil’s Latino identity. These artists “are making it clear that Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia and other countries are part of Latin America. And that America is not the United States,” she said.

The scene leading up to showtime was pure chaos — in the best way. Crowds started piling onto the beach Saturday morning to nab a good spot, with street vendors hawking sweet corn, caipirinhas, bottled water, and — perhaps most memorably — bags of sand for concertgoers to stand on for a better sightline.

And Rio isn’t just doing this for the culture. Mayor Cavaliere said at a Wednesday press event, “For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city,” adding, “Our investment in this show will give us a financial return 40 times greater.”

The numbers back that up. Despite being a free concert, Shakira’s show was expected to generate an estimated $150 million in tourism revenue for the city, according to local government.

Not bad for a free show on the beach.
