Fancy dress balls and theatrical performances have been a fixture of royal life for centuries, a tradition that stretches from the elaborate masquerade balls of the Tudor court to the Christmas pantomimes that a young Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret staged at Windsor Castle during World War II.
