Sadie Sink’s Spider-Man role is no longer a mystery.

The Stranger Things star appears as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being confirmed after months of speculation from fans.

The film, which was released on Friday, July 31, follows Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, as he faces an enemy capable of entering any mind within 33 feet and taking control of that person. That figure is eventually revealed to be Sink’s Jean Grey. The character is not presented as a villain. Instead, Jean and her sister, Sara, have been targeted by the Department of Damage Control, which is seeking to reproduce their mind-control abilities. The news follows Ryan Reynolds breaking his silence after he went incognito at Comic Con.

Sink’s appearance marks the first full introduction of an X-Men character into the main MCU timeline. Previous versions of Jean Grey appeared in the 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise, which exists separately from Marvel Studios’ central universe.

Famke Janssen played the adult Jean in X-Men in 2000, X2: X-Men United in 2003, and X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. Sophie Turner later portrayed a younger Jean in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 and Dark Phoenix in 2019.

Sink, 24, had been linked to the role since her casting was announced in 2025, though she avoided confirming the reports. Jimmy Fallon pressed her about the rumors during Wednesday’s episode of The Tonight Show, July 29, asking whether she was playing Jean.

"Wouldn’t you like to know," Sink replied. She said keeping the role secret had made promoting the movie easier. "I get a little nervous for interviews sometimes," she explained. "And so, if I don’t have to talk about anything, it relaxes me. I’m like, 'I don’t have anything to say.'"

Sink previously told Fallon that online speculation about her joining the movie surfaced before Marvel approached her. "There was speculation online that said, 'Sadie Sink is going to be in the new ‘Spider-Man.’ I was like, ‘Hmm? I am?’" she said in January. "And sure enough, two days later, they asked me to do it. So yeah, those theories, there’s sometimes some truth to it."

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said Sink’s casting helped determine which character would fit the story. "We had a Peter story that we wanted to tell, and knew that there were a number of characters that could fit into that," he told Entertainment Weekly. "And it was Sadie’s name who came up that solidified the idea of the character that she’s playing."

Holland also praised Sink’s work, particularly in the final portion of the film. "She handled the pressure of the character that she’s playing with such grace," he said. "And the third act, she steals the movie. It is so good."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.
