Rob Reiner said he believed his son Nick was "in a really good place" in a September interview, three months before he and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were killed on Dec. 14

Rob, who was 78, and Nick, 32, previously collaborated on the 2015 movie, Being Charlie

Nick was charged with two counts of murder in connection to his parents' deaths on Monday, Dec. 15

Rob Reiner said he believed his son Nick Reiner was in "a really good place" during an interview just three months before the director and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were killed.

In newly resurfaced clips from Reiner's September interview with NPR, the filmmaker, who was promoting Spinal Tap II: The End Continues at the time, revisited his 2015 movie Being Charlie, which he directed and Nick co-wrote. The film follows a teenager struggling with addiction, echoing some of Nick’s self-described “dark years” after he started to use drugs at a young age.

During the interview, Rob compared his relationship with Nick to the father-son one depicted in the film, saying that unlike the dad in the film, "I was never, ever too busy" for Nick.

"I mean, if anything, I was the other way, you know, I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help," he continued. "I'm sure I made mistakes and, you know, I've talked about that with him since."

Rob added that he believed Nick was doing well in the September interview. "He's been great … hasn't been doing drugs for over six years," he said. "He's in a really good place."

Nick and the Reiner family have spoken about his struggles with addiction and homelessness, beginning in his teens. Nick told PEOPLE in a 2016 interview about Being Charlie that he had been in rehab 17 times and experienced some stints of homelessness along the way.

“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun," he said at the time. "That made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff. . . Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in Los Angeles and being around my family. But there was a lot of dark years there."
