In a recent interview, Richard Thomas said his role as John-Boy on The Waltons made him a household name, but also led to years of typecasting
He explained it took time and steady work to reshape his career after his departure from the show at the end of season 5
Despite the challenges, the 74-year-old actor still holds deep gratitude for the series and its lasting impact
Richard Thomas is reflecting on one of the most defining chapters of his career — and the challenges that came with it.
Best known for his breakout role on The Waltons, the actor became a household name during the show’s original run. But that level of recognition also brought an unexpected hurdle: typecasting. In a candid conversation with Page Six, Thomas opened up about the long road to reshaping his professional identity after leaving the series.
“I figured, I’d been in the show for five years,” the 74-year-old actor said. “It was going to take at least five years to sort of do enough work to start to balance the scales.”

Premiering in the early 1970s, the series followed a tight-knit family navigating life through the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II. Thomas portrayed John-Boy Walton, the gentle, introspective eldest son whose ambitions of becoming a writer resonated deeply with audiences.
His performance made the character one of television’s most recognizable figures, but it also meant stepping out of that shadow in 1977 required time and persistence.
Despite those challenges, Thomas has remained deeply appreciative of the experience. He emphasized his enduring admiration for the series, sharing, “I have nothing but only incredible gratitude, affection and fond memories. It was a wonderful piece of television for its time.”

Following his departure, Thomas steadily built a diverse body of work across television and stage.
He appeared in projects including It and took on a variety of guest roles, while also reconnecting with theater — a passion that began in childhood. His stage career has included acclaimed performances, such as his Tony-nominated turn in Little Foxes, and his portrayal of Atticus Finch in the national tour of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Now appearing in the Broadway comedy The Balusters, Thomas continues to embrace new roles — a testament to the persistence he once described as necessary to “balance the scales.”
