Reese Witherspoon is speaking out after discovering that multiple people have been impersonating her online and attempting to take advantage of fans through private messages.
In a candid video shared via her Instagram story, the Oscar-winner explained that she has been dealing with a surge of reports that fake accounts on TikTok and Instagram having been posing as her, using her name and likeness.
"I want to just tell you what I've been dealing with for the 24 hours," she says in the video message. "There are multiple people on TikTok and Instagram impersonating me."
According to Witherspoon, the impersonators aren't just having fun, but actively reaching out to fans in private messages for a variety of nefarious purposes. She said these accounts attempt to build trust before trying to extract personal information, arrange meetups or ask for money. She was clear and emphatic that these messages are not coming from her and never will.
"I want you to know this is not me. And it's so upsetting that people would use my name to manipulate people, but I want you to know that I would never ever manipulate you. I would never reach out to you for money, for private information, to a create a meetup time."
Witherspoon pointed out that online impersonation is a broader issue that impacts countless public figures and their fans, acknowledging that it was deeply unsettling to see it happening on such a large scale with little recourse.
She urged fans to stay vigilant when interacting with people they don't know personally on social media, ending her message with a straightforward plea rooted in concern for those who may unknowingly be targeted.
"Please look at these accounts that are doing this and make sure they're verified," she cautioned. "Please be careful out there and please know I would never, never reach out to you to manipulate you or take anything from you."
