Princess Diana's marriage to then-Prince Charles started off bumpy in July 1981, and issues began during their honeymoon.
After their famous wedding, the two boarded the royal yacht Britannia for a 12-day tour of the Mediterranean. Despite the trip's romantic setting, the distance between the newlyweds was already evident. A letter Charles wrote from the yacht already spotlighted this reality, even though he declared, "Marriage is very jolly."
He wrote, "Diana dashes about chatting up all the sailors and the cooks in the galley etc. while I remain hermit-like on the veranda deck, sunk with pure joy into one of Laurens van der Post's books," explaining that they were already spending their time separately during their honeymoon.

Tensions escalated after Diana saw Charles wearing personalized cufflinks, a gift from her husband's ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he later married in 2005 after his divorce from Diana and her death.
"Cufflinks arrive on his wrists - two 'C's entwined like the Chanel 'C's. Got it in one; knew exactly. 'Camilla gave you those, didn't she?' "Diana recalled during recordings made for writer Andrew Morton's 1992 biography.
"He said, 'Yes, so what's wrong? They're a present from a friend.' And, boy, did we have a row," he continued. Additionally, royal biographer Catherine Mayer recalled in Divide and Rule that Charles became "in a lather about the loss of a cufflink just before the pre-wedding ball at Buckingham Palace," which came as a part of a set Camilla had given him. Diana was "well aware" of that, too.

Camilla's gift of cufflinks to Charles was one of the many hints that they still had feelings for each other.
Diana found a "goodbye" bracelet that Charles meant to give Camilla before they married. Then, when it came ton the honeymoon, Diana saw two photos of Camilla fall out of her husband's diary as they compared schedules.

During their honeymoon cruise, Diana experienced sickness and loneliness, explaining to Andrew in her 1995 1995 Panorama interview that she struggled with bouts of bulimia and dealing with becoming "obsessed by Camilla."
She eventually told Andrew, "At night, I dreamt of Camilla the whole time."
Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996 after more than a decade of a tumultuous marriage.
