Princess Charlotte broke a long-standing Royal tradition dating back several decades during her appearance at Wimbledon on Sunday, July 13.
The only daughter of Kate Middleton and Prince William was spotted in the stands wearing a cream-colored dress with a frilled collar and navy lining, adding a pop of color to the overall neutral ensemble with her bubblegum pink manicure.
It's a shade not typically seen on members of the Royal family, who have long abided by an unofficial tradition reportedly instilled by the late Queen Elizabeth, who is said to have found bright colors "distracting."
The former monarch favored Essie's "Ballet Slippers," a soft, neutral pink that she could often be seen sporting all the way back to 1989, though it was never written into any "actual protocol," royal correspondent Omid Scobie once explained to Harper's Bazaar. Instead, it was all about "being appropriate" for the event at hand. For example, "we’d never see [a dark manicure] at a royal engagement," but it was A-okay for the British Fashion Awards, where Meghan Markle once wore a deep burgundy color.
The 10-year-old's mother is also known to occasionally rock a red, such as the bright shade she wore with her blue Easter outfit two holidays ago. Perhaps they'll continue to incorporate more expressive colors into their style, modernizing the monarchy in their own way as time goes on.
