Prince Harry apparently does not see himself as simply a “private citizen.” A new report claims he still expects a place within the Royal Family. That belief is said to have fueled his reaction to the Palace’s latest guidance. Now, the Sussexes’ return to Britain is raising fresh questions about what they hope to achieve.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were seemingly unhappy after Buckingham Palace issued guidance reaffirming their status outside the working Royal Family. The letter reminded senior figures that the couple should be treated as “private citizens” with commercial and charitable interests. Their HRH titles also remain in abeyance.
The response was swift. Sources close to the couple pushed back on the wording and argued that “public figures” was a more appropriate description. They also reportedly wanted recognition that, despite stepping away from royal duties, they remain members of the Royal Family on a personal level.
Naturally, that stance has raised some eyebrows. After all, Harry and Meghan said in 2020 that they wanted to live as private citizens. Yet now, according to the Daily Mail‘s report, Harry’s friends are arguing that the latest Palace move was hardly unexpected.

“He is not surprised,” one friend said. The source claimed Harry and Meghan had prepared themselves for another clash with the establishment. Their view, as per the friend, is that the couple had faced repeated negative briefings while living in Britain before their move to the US.
But another source offered a much more pointed explanation for Harry’s reaction. “Look, they expect to be let back in,” the insider said. The source went further, claiming that the Duke believes the Royal Family “need him.” According to the same source, the couple feels they have exhausted many of their options in America and that returning to Britain could give them renewed relevance.
That could make their plans in the UK especially significant. Harry has announced a series of September engagements, including the launch of the INSPIRE educational initiative and the WellChild Awards. He is also expected to travel to New York for the Clinton Global Initiative later this month.
