Actors from the X-Men franchise and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday are paying tribute to Patrick Stewart after news broke that he died at 86 on Wednesday, Oct. 28

Stewart has portrayed the character Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise since 2000, and December’s Avengers: Doomsday will be his last film appearance

A longtime spokesperson for the actor said he died at his home in Los Angeles “following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia”

A host of actors who worked with Patrick Stewart on the popular X-Men superhero movies and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday — his final film — are remembering the late actor after he died at 86 on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Kelly Bush Novak, a longtime spokesperson for Stewart, announced his death in a Thursday, Oct. 29 statement, sharing that he died following “a brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

During the last 25 years of his lengthy acting career, Stewart costarred with Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Brian Cox, Anna Paquin, Rebecca Romijn, Shawn Ashmore and more in the original three X-Men movies produced in the 2000s. He also made appearances as the character in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and 2013’s The Wolverine and reprised the part in full in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and 2017’s Logan.

Following the news of his death, Jackman, 58, shared two photos of himself with Stewart on Instagram. “We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days,” he wrote in the caption.

Janssen, 61, also honored the actor, calling him a “legend” and “one of the greats” in a statement to PEOPLE.

“I had the pleasure and honor of working with him over several decades,” she said. “First as Kamala opposite him as Captain Picard in Startrek: The Next Generation and later on as Jean Grey with Patrick embodying Professor X in the X-Men movies. You will be missed, Patrick, but never forgotten.”

Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige also shared a sweet remembrance of his time knowing Stewart with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’ll never forget the first time I saw Sir Patrick Stewart on the set of the first X-Men. After years of knowing him as the inimitable Captain Picard, I was in awe — and he turned out to be everything I had seen on screen and more: brilliant, charming, warm, generous, with a quiet strength and gravitas,” Feige, 53, said. “Away from the cameras, he was even more remarkable, with a wonderfully sharp sense of humor.”

“It was a true privilege to know him and to work with him,” he added. “His legacy lives on not only in decades of extraordinary work, but in the many, many people he mentored. He will be deeply missed.”

Feige’s comments followed a statement from Marvel Studios’ X account, which noted that “all of us” are “deeply saddened” by the legendary actor’s death.

“Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from X-Men to Logan to Avengers: Doomsday,” the statement read. “He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to his wife Sunny, his children, his friends, and the countless fans around the world whose lives he touched with his art.”
