Patrick Stewart will return as Professor Charles Xavier in his final film role.

Stewart died at the age of 86 on Wednesday after battling Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His death comes less than two months before the release of Avengers: Doomsday, which will see Stewart reprise his role as Professor X.

The upcoming film will mark the first Avengers installment to fold in the X-Men. Stewart’s role was announced in March 2025 alongside the casting of his fellow X-Men costars Ian McKellen (Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto), Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and James Marsden (Scott Summers/Cyclops). His Professor X first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022.

Marvel shared a peek at Stewart, McKellen, and Marsden in the new film in January. In the teaser, Professor X and his perpetual frenemy Magneto are playing chess in the dilapidated Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the telepath’s safe haven for young mutants.

In the wake of Stewart’s death, Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo paid tribute to the actor, sharing a photo of him in the movie.

“We’ve been lucky enough to work with some of our childhood heroes. And Sir Patrick Stewart will always be one of them,” the Russo brothers wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday. “A legendary actor with an unmistakeable presence, and an unmatched integrity. Thank you for entertaining all of us, sir. And for teaching us humanity, both on and off the screen.”
