David Corenswet trades his cape for a helmet in a role that proves not all superheroes wear spandex. The Superman star’s first trailer for his next big film reveals an inspiring true story rooted in the NFL.
David Corenswet stars in Mr. Irrelevant trailer as NFL’s John Tuggle
David Corenswet stars in the first trailer for Mr. Irrelevant as NFL underdog John Tuggle. Paramount Pictures released the trailer on September 13, 2026, for the biographical sports drama. The film arrives exclusively in theatres on December 25, 2026.
Notably, Tuggle was the final player selected in the last round of the 1983 NFL draft. The New York Giants picked him, earning him the title “Mr. Irrelevant.” Moreover, the trailer shows Tuggle defying expectations as a true underdog on and off the field. His journey unfolds under first-year head coach Bill Parcells, played by Michael Shannon. Meanwhile, Isabel May portrays Katie, a fictional love interest not based on Tuggle’s real ex-wife, Stephanie.
Jonathan Levine directs the film from a screenplay by Nick Santora. Additionally, Skydance Sports, Blackjack Films, and Megamix produce the project together. David Krumholtz also joins the cast as Julius “Whitey” Horai. The film runs 125 minutes and explores themes of hope and perseverance against great challenges.

The trailer’s YouTube description calls Tuggle’s story “inspiring” and states he “proved that remarkable hope and perseverance can transcend even the greatest challenges.” It also notes Parcells was Tuggle’s “then first-year head coach” with the Giants.
Furthermore, principal photography began in April 2025 in Victoria, Australia. Melbourne and Geelong served as key filming locations for the production. Kardinia Park Stadium in Geelong and La Trobe University Sports Park in Bundoora doubled as NFL stadiums. As a result, the production created 825 jobs and injected around $29 million into the local economy.
Corenswet’s casting was first reported in October 2024 by Deadline Hollywood. May entered talks to join in March 2025, while Shannon signed on in April 2025. The project was initially announced in October 2023 with Levine attached to direct.
