"What I'm able to do to the bad guys I think is going to be very satisfying for an audience," Jovovich says

Milla Jovovich went to great physical lengths to film action scenes for her latest movie.
In Protector, the 50-year-old actress portrays Nikki, a military veteran who sets out to save her teenage daughter after sex traffickers kidnap her. Jovovich, a longtime action star known for the Resident Evil movies and The Fifth Element, tells PEOPLE that she was thrilled to perform the hand-to-hand combat and action stunts required for the movie, including hanging upside down for minutes at a time while filming a scene in which her character escapes captivity.
"There's sort of been a kind of overwhelm with so much CGI in movies, and so it was really fun to be able to do a film where the only way to get it done is for you to do it," she says. "You know, the only way that my face is going to turn blue is to hang upside down for a long time and make sure that it's done correctly."
"It was one of the most difficult films physically, emotionally, that I've ever shot, but also one of the most satisfying experiences," Jovovich adds.

Protector comes some three months after Jovovich, who shares three kids with her Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson, turned 50 in December. As she tells PEOPLE, the new movie is the start of a new era for her journey through the film industry: Jovovich began producing her own movies alongside Anderson, 60, with last year's In the Lost Lands and continued with this movie, some 38 years after she made her screen acting debut.

"I think as an actor so many times it's really frustrating because you get to do one single aspect and then once you're wrapped with that film, you never know what's going to happen," Jovovich says of working as a producer. "But to be able to really take such a lead in post-production was amazing for me. I loved it. I loved being able to go through and edit, to really find the parts of my performance that I loved."

The movie's kidnapping plotline also hits hard for Jovovich, who describes the film's premise as "every parent's worst nightmare."
"What I'm able to do to the bad guys I think is going to be very satisfying for an audience," she tells PEOPLE. "That part of it I really loved was because I got a chance to take all that rage and put it into the stunt sequences and really figure out — what's the worst that I could do, how to really punish these guys, 'cause they deserve it."
Protector is in theaters March 6.
