Why John Stewart killed Zoe in Lanterns Episode 5 explained

Lanterns Episode 5 delivered a jaw-dropping ending that changes everything fans thought they knew about John Stewart’s journey. The episode’s final moments reveal why John made his most devastating choice yet and what Poorna Jagannathan told Variety about Zoe’s last look before the trigger was pulled.

In Lanterns Episode 5, John Stewart killed Zoe Macon after discovering she manipulated everyone around her. He used Hal’s beaten body as bait to lure the Manhunter into the open. John then sniped Zoe from a distance, saying “I see you, Zoe” before pulling the trigger.

John no longer trusted anyone in the conflict, including Hal, the Guardians, and Zoe herself. Zoe had promised to kill Hal so John could take the ring and fulfill his destiny. However, John recognized the cycle of violence and deception surrounding the ring’s transfer.

Poorna Jagannathan broke down Zoe’s final moment in an interview with Variety. “John is the only person she has ever encountered that she didn’t predict,” Jagannathan said. She added that Zoe’s last look was “kind of game-recognized-game.” The actress described it as “a complete appreciation for someone whose sense of morality outdid anything and everything.”

After shooting Zoe, John cut out her heart, which crystallized and confirmed her Manhunter identity. He then took the ring, the lantern, and the crystallized heart through Rushville’s wreckage. John carried these items to the Guardian, played by Laura Linney, who waited for him nearby.

John placed the ring on the bar and rejected his supposed destiny as Green Lantern entirely. He told the Guardian that wearing the ring made him feel only emptiness despite a lifetime of preparation. “Hal betrayed everything to keep this ring: his code, the oath, even himself, and it broke him,” John said. He added that Hal “probably doesn’t even remember why he wanted the damn thing… and neither do I.”

Jagannathan also explained why Zoe chose John over Hal as her potential protector. “She quickly assessed who could be her strongest protector, and it wasn’t Hal,” the actress said. She believed Zoe saw something special in John and knew “he is going to be the better Green Lantern.”

John’s rejection marks the first autonomous decision he made without pressure from his parents or the Guardians. The killing eliminated the Manhunter threat but left both Lantern positions vacant. Lanterns now shifts toward its 2026 timeline, where John investigates Hal’s murder in Rushville.
