Legendary director Rob Reiner, 78, and his longtime wife Michele Singer, 68, were found dead in their Brentwood home on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025. While many are remembering Reiner's professional success, like starring in All in the Family or directing When Harry Met Sally and Princess Bride, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass took a moment to honor the star's contributions to his community in the wake of his death.

"This is a devastating loss for our city and our country," she wrote on X. "Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice." She added that the "engaged political activist" had "always used his gifts in service of others.

Bass went on to share that she knew Reiner and Singer personally, and had "tremendous respect for him," adding that she was "heartbroken" by their deaths. She highlighted some of Reiner's political and charitable work, saying, "Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs. He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights."
"I'm holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart," she concluded while thanking first responders.

Reiner was a father of four children, including his daughter Tracy, whom he adopted during his first marriage to Penny Marshall, Jake, Nick, and Romy with Singer. According to People, Romy was the one to find her parents dead, and their sonNick was responsible for their deaths.
The familyreleased a statement shortly after news broke that the couple was found dead in their home with knife wounds.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner," the statement read, according to Variety. "We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
