Kim Wayans is opening up about how big a deal it is for her family to reboot the Scary Moviefranchise.

Wayans, 64, walked the red carpet alongside her brothers Marlon and Shawn and nephew Damon Wayans Jr. at the Los Angeles premiere of the new Scary Movie on Wednesday, June 3. The actress and comedian appears on the big screen for the first time in nearly 10 years in the new movie, a retooling of the franchise that comes more than two decades after the Wayans brothers exited after Scary Movie 2.

"It means a lot. It means a lot, because that was very hurtful. It was very hurtful to create something, to have it be your baby, and then to have it stripped away is very hurtful," Kim tells PEOPLE. "This is a healing moment and a beautiful moment, and I feel like the universe is blessing this moment."

Kim's brothers — Marlon, 53, Shawn, 55, and Keenen Ivory, 67 — originated the popular horror movie spoof series with 2000's original Scary Movie, a parody of then-revolutionary horror movies like Scream. The Wayans were the creative forces behind the series' first two movies and exited the franchise prior to 2003's Scary Movie 3.

Marlon announced in 2024 that he and his brothers were returning for the franchise's new movie. In a recent interview with Variety, he claimed that the series "was stripped from us" by producers Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein, who owned the studio Miramax in the early 2000s. Marlon claimed that the Weinstein brothers refused the Wayans' demands for raises to make a third Scary Movie and subsequently stole their idea for Scary Movie 3.

In addition to the Wayans' return, the new Scary Movie also brings back the franchise's original stars like Regina Hall and Anna Faris, as well as Anthony Anderson, a friend of the family who previously appeared in the franchise's third and fourth entries.

Kim, for her part, has never appeared in a Scary Movie entry before. She broke out alongside her siblings on their 1990s sketch comedy series In Living Color and has worked in Hollywood as a writer and director over the years. She last appeared on the big screen in the 2017 movie Ray Meets Helen.

"Recently, I started my own YouTube channel, so I got back in the groove of being in front of the camera," she tells PEOPLE of returning to acting for the new movie. "When [her brothers] called, I was ready to jump back in, and all they said was, 'Sis, come play,' and that's all they need to say."

Members of the Wayans family were inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame back in February in recognition of their contributions to Black pop culture and entertainment over the decades.

"I'm the voice of reason. I'm the, I guess you'd say... I hate to use that word, 'matriarch,' because it sounds like I'm 90, but I'm that person," Kim tells PEOPLE of her role in the family of entertainers. "I am very reasonable and I am very objective, and so when they get into it, or whatever, I can see everything that's going down and give you an honest opinion of what's happening, as opposed to siding with this one or siding with that one. It's a certain objectivity that I have that a lot of my siblings don't have."
