Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, the real-life couple behind I Love Lucy, captivated audiences with their on-screen chemistry.

The two met on the set of the 1940 film, Too Many Girls and eloped six months later, according to Warren G. Harris’ biography, Lucy & Desi: The Legendary Love Story of Television’s Most Famous Couple.

From falling head over heels to co-creating one of American television's most beloved sitcoms, their love story was as memorable as the episodes they brought to the screen each week during the show’s six year run. While the show capitalized off the two’s real-life romance, Aranz and Ball’s marriage eventually ended a few years after leaving the screen.

In addition, the show was filled with complex connections, from Vivian Vance finding lasting love later in life, William Frawley’s vaudeville past and the love stories that began after the cameras stopped rolling.

Ball worked as a chorus girl on Broadway before meeting Arnaz on the set of the film Too Many Girls in 1940.

“I never fell in love with anyone quite so fast. He was very handsome and romantic,” she recalled, according to Warren G. Harris’ biography, Lucy & Desi: The Legendary Love Story of Television’s Most Famous Couple.

Six months later, they eloped on Nov. 30, 1940. Ball later said that quickly marrying Arnaz was "the most daring thing" she had ever done in her life and she had reservations on how long it would last, giving it six weeks.

A decade later, Ball and Arnaz were going strong when they co-founded their production company Desilu in 1950, followed by their show I Love Lucy in 1951.

Centered on ambitious housewife Lucy Ricardo and her show business husband, Ricky Ricardo, the series became one of America’s most beloved sitcoms and broke barriers with a strong female lead, a Cuban American star and a groundbreaking on-screen pregnancy.

During their marriage, Ball and Arnaz welcomed two children: Lucie Arnaz, born on July 17, 1951, and Desi Arnaz Jr., born on Jan. 19, 1953. Their kids eventually became part of the family’s television legacy, starring on the I Love Lucy spinoff Here’s Lucy.

Despite their on-screen bliss, their marriage was not without its difficulties behind the scenes, with the two deciding to split in 1960 due to Arnaz’s reported affairs and struggles with alcoholism.

In the following years, Ball and Arnaz remained committed co-parents, and they redefined their relationship as good friends.

Ball went on to marry comedian Gary Morton in 1961, whom she was with until her death at age 77 on April 26, 1989. Arnaz wed again to Edith Mack Hirsch in 1963 and they were together when he died at 69 on Dec. 2, 1986.

Vance, one half of the duo that played the Ricardos’ bickering landlords and neighbors on I Love Lucy, was married four times, finding lasting love in her marriage to John Dodds, an executive of Putnam's and then at Simon & Schuster, according to The New York Times.

Vance appreciated her husband’s literary connections.

“Our house is full of writers all the time, and I've always loved writers,” she said. “As an actress, I'm so beholden to writers; without the word, we are nothing.”

William Frawley

Frawley portrayed Fred Mertz, opposite Vance’s Ethel Mertz, on I Love Lucy.

The actor, also known for his role in Miracle on 34th Street. Frawley began his career in vaudeville alongside his wife Edna Louise Broedt in 1914, according to Mental Floss.

They formed the comedy duo, Frawley and Louis, touring the Orpheum and the Keith circuits until their divorce in 1927. This was Frawley's only marriage.

Keith Thibodeaux and Kathy Thibodeaux

Keith Thibodeaux, who played Little Ricky, the firstborn child of the Ricardos on I Love Lucy, married American ballet dancer Kathy Thibodeaux in October 1976, according to an Instagram post marking their anniversary.

Thibodeaux and Kathy founded Ballet Magnificat!, a Christian dance company, together in 1986, according to the company’s website.
