There has been no shortage of successful movies over the years.

In the summer of 2026 alone, several movies are projected to achieve historic success at the box office, and one day be included on this list of highest-grossing of all time. The Christopher Nolan-directed, star-studded film The Odyssey has grossed over $900 million worldwide two weeks after its July 2026 release, per Deadline.

Just one week later, Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed The Odyssey’s opening weekend domestic box office by bringing in a total of $360 million grossed in North America, according to multipleoutlets. The fourth movie in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series broke the previous record from 2019’s Avengers: Endgame that scored $357 million the first weekend, per Variety.

Over the years, several films and franchises — from Star Wars to Avatar — that have broken similar records have made their way to the list of top grossing films.

Here are the eight highest-grossing movies of all time, without adjusting for inflation, as of August 2026.

Avatar - $2.9 Billion

James Cameron smashed blockbuster records with his 2009 science fiction film Avatar.

The movie, which starred Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington, is currently the highest-grossing movie of all time with a worldwide total of $2,923,710,708, according to Deadline.

Avengers: Endgame - $2.7 Billion

The MCU had a hit on their hands when they released their most recent Avengers filmAvengers: Endgame in 2019.

The Anthony and Joe Russo-directed film — which featured a star-studded superhero cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson — earned a global box office total of $2,799,439,100, per Deadline.

The film made history when it surpassed Avatar in crossing the $2 billion threshold in just 11 days and $2.5 billion in 20 days, Disney announced at the time.

Avatar: The Way of Water - $2.3 Billion

Since Avatar was a box office smash, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that the 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, also performed well.

Avatar: The Way of Water — which Cameron also directed and Worthington and Saldaña returned for — grossed $2,334,484,620 internationally, per Deadline.

Titanic - $2.264 billion

Before Cameron found massive success with his Avatar franchise, he broke records with his 1997 film Titanic.

The historical romance, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, became the first movie to reach the billion-dollar mark and went on to globally gross $2,264,812,968, per Deadline.

The Chinese animated adventure film Ne Zha 2 broke several national and international box office records when it hit theaters in January 2025.

The fantasy movie, which is the sequel to the 2019 original film directed by Jiaozi, earned an estimated $2,260,176,370, based on exchange rates converted by Deadline.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $2.07 Billion

Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the first film in the Star Wars franchise to reach $2 billion internationally.

The 2015 space opera, which is also known as Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, was directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Adam Driver.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned $2,071,310,218 in the global box office, per Deadline.

Prior to Avengers: Endgame shattering international box office records, its predecessor also made history by becoming the first superhero film to gross over $2 billion worldwide.

Avengers: Infinity War, which is the third installment in the MCU Avengers franchise, featured a similar cast of superheros in the Russo-directed movie.

Avengers: Infinity War was released in April 2018 and scored an estimated global total of $2,052,415,039, per Deadline.

Spider-Man: No Way Home - $1.9 Billion

Tom Holland and Zendaya helped launch the Spider-Man franchise to global box office popularity with the release of their 2021 film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The superhero MCU movie, which was directed by Jon Watts, grossed $1,921,426,073 worldwide, per Deadline.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, it could potentially be beaten by its sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has set a record for the top box office opening weekend of all time in July 2026.
