Florence Pugh Dazzles in Almost 60 Carats of Jewels and the Most Dramatic Black Plunging Ballgown

Florence Pugh appeared at a screening of the East of Eden on September 25 in London.
She wore a black taffeta ballgown by Rodarte along with a Bvlgari necklace featuring around 60 carats of diamonds and rubellite.
She also spoke to InStyle about the show on the red carpet.
Florence Pugh is back on the road with another press tour. Her adaption of John Steinbeck’s classic American novel East of Eden is due to land on Netflix on October 1. On September 26, the actress appeared in London at a special BAFTA screening of the show—and, naturally, she embraced the story’s time period with some high drama on the red carpet.
Styled by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Pugh opted for a billowing, over-the-top black taffeta ballgown by Rodarte for the appearance. With its towering sculptural sleeves, fitted waist, and giant ruffled hoop skirt, she looked like she’d stepped straight out of a Gilded Age fever dream. But it was her dazzling necklace that really caught the eye. The actress wore a high jewellery piece by Bvlgari with onyx details, an oval 28.21 carat deep pink rubellite, 10.01 carats of 68 marquise diamonds, and 21.73 carats of pavé-set diamonds, bringing the necklace to a total of almost 60 carats.

She wore her hair in an intricate half-up ‘do, with long blonde curls falling down her back and completed the look with a deep pink lip to match her megawatt necklace.
Pugh stars as the infamous Cathy Ames in the upcoming Netflix adaption of East of Eden. A ruthless, fiercely independent woman doing just about anything to make her way in late-1890s, early 1900s America, Cathy has previously been interpreted as a sadistic, sociopathic villain. But this adaptation finds new layers in Cathy.
“I think with Cathy, I’ve been given the honor of playing someone that has, for many decades, been listed as a villain—or as bad, or as evil,” she tells us exclusively on the red carpet at the screening. “And looking at it from our perspective, from women that really want to understand other women, there’s a bit of context, there’s motive. There’s understanding behind the woman that she is and the decisions that she makes. That’s been the most exciting thing for me to find and figure out and learn: who is that woman?”

It’s far from the first time Pugh has stepped into the shoes of a complicated, independent woman who is pushing back against the gendered expectations of her time. Just take her iconic reimagining of Amy in 2019’s Little Women, her powerful performance as Yelena in the Marvel franchise, or her strong take on Princess Irulan in the recent Dune films.
“I think I’ve always been interested in women that are fighting,” she says. “Women that are pushing against what they know and what they’re being forced to know.”

Pugh reflects that it’s why many of her characters resonate with women today. “I think it’s something that we all similarly feel like we’re probably living through in our lifetimes,” she said. “They may not be as dramatic or as drastic as the characters that I’m playing and the decisions that they’re making, but I feel like most women have an understanding of what it feels like to push back. And it’s something that I love to find—I love to feel.”
And it’s something we all definitely love to watch.
