Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to end production of Tesla's Cybertruck after disappointing sales.

The trillionaire shared last night that production of the controversial electric vehicle will wind down in 2027 to allow the company to focus on producing more robotaxis. "Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production," Musk wrote on social media.

The announcement comes just three years after the Cybertruck first went on sale. Musk praised the vehicle as "bulletproof" and "apocalypse-proof," while the company's website promoted its "ultra-hard stainless-steel exoskeleton" and a range of up to 325 miles.

But the vehicle's high price tag soured demand among motorists. It was initially priced at $39,999, but the cheapest version now starts at $60,000.

Tesla sold just 11,586 Cybertrucks in the first nine months of 2026, according to analysts at Cox Automotive, far below Musk's previous predictions of 250,000 sales a year.

While Musk said the product was the ultimate off-road electric vehicle, the Cybertruck suffered several mishaps and faults before and after its launch. During its 2019 launch event, a Tesla executive demonstrated its toughened glass by throwing a ball bearing at its window, smashing it.

Tesla has also been forced to issue recalls for the truck due to braking issues and other problems, such as the truck's trim falling off.

Musk made the decision to end production as he attempts to revive the company by focusing on AI, robotics, and driverless taxis, increasing production of its Cybercab vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots.

The company has launched ride-hailing services in several cities and plans to produce up to 125,000 autonomous electric cabs per year at its Texas plant.

Shares in Tesla dropped this week after the Democrats achieved a massive blue wave in the midterm elections, taking both the House and Senate.

Tesla's stock is down more than 12 points since Tuesday, while SpaceX is down 11 points. Musk's net worth dropped by close to $80 billion in one day on Thursday, to around $785 billion, according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index.
