Donald Trump asserted he predicted the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the threat posed by Osama bin Laden a full year before the tragedy happened. The claim has been met with widespread fact-checking that contradicts the U.S. President’s statements.
Donald Trump makes bold statement about 9/11
During a discussion about current tensions with Iran, Trump pivoted to his alleged foresight regarding terrorism. “I predicted Osama Bin Laden would knock out the World Trade Center.” He added that he made this prediction approximately one year before the attack that killed nearly 3,000 people.
The President went further, claiming documentation exists to support his statement. “I wrote it in a book. You can even check, about a year before the World Trade Center came down.” Trump insisted, directing listeners to his 2000 book “The America We Deserve” as evidence of his prediction.
Further, Donald Trump also used the moment to criticize former President Bill Clinton. He suggested the Clinton administration failed to act against Osama bin Laden when they had the opportunity (via The Daily Beast).
Despite Trump’s confidence in his claims, fact-checkers have repeatedly debunked this assertion over many years. Multiple news organizations have examined Donald Trump’s 2000 book. Unsurprisingly, they found no evidence supporting his current narrative about predicting the 9/11 attacks.

According to CNN’s fact-checking analysis, “The America We Deserve” mentions Osama bin Laden only once. The single reference does not call for bin Laden’s death, warn of an impending attack on American soil, or predict the World Trade Center would be targeted.
The book’s passage about bin Laden reads: “One day we’re told that a shadowy figure with no fixed address named Osama bin Laden is public enemy number one, and the U.S. jetfighters lay waste to his camp in Afghanistan. He escapes back under some rock, and a few news cycles later, it’s on to a new enemy and new crisis.”
Meanwhile, another section of the book does address the possibility of terrorist attacks against the United States. Still, it makes no specific mention of al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden being responsible for such an attack.
