G.R.L. alum Lauren Bennett died by suicide.
At an inquest at Kent and Medway Coroners’ Court in Maidstone, England, assistant coroner Jyoti Gill told the court that Bennett was being treated by “special mental health services” shortly before her death in May after experiencing “substantial psychological suffering” following her detainment in a psychiatric hospital in January, according to a report from Metro U.K.
The report adds that Bennett “continued to report symptoms of distress regarding the effects of the prescribed medication” leading up to her death. Gill found Bennett’s manner and cause of death to be suicide by hanging.
Bennett died at 36 on May 29 near her home in the village of Meopham, England, according to local coroner records previously reviewed by PEOPLE. She had woken her husband, dancer and actor Kenny Wormald, to say that she was going for a morning walk but ultimately did not return home. Wormald told police that he and her father, Richard Bennett, then traced the singer’s location via her phone and discovered her body.
On July 6, G.R.L. announced her death in a statement posted on Instagram. “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Lauren,” the statement began.

“Our hearts are broken, and we cannot begin to express how much she meant to us. We will forever cherish the love, laughter and countless memories she gave us,” the statement continued. “Her beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and she will be deeply missed and forever loved.”
“Rest peacefully, sweet Lauren,” the statement concluded. “You will always be in our hearts.”

The English singer began her career with Paradiso Girls, before going solo and being featured on LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” She also worked with will.i.am on the remix of “I Got It from My Mama.”
Bennett later joined G.R.L. and they released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, reaching international fame with their hit song “Ugly Heart.” That same year, they were featured on Pitbull‘s song “Wild Wild Love.”
Bennett is survived by her now 7-year-old daughter, Harlow, whom she welcomed with Wormald in September 2019.
