The entertainment world is mourning the loss of comedy legend Catherine O’Hara, who died Friday (January 30, 2026) at her Los Angeles home following a brief illness. The beloved actress was 71 years old.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from Hollywood, particularly from her Schitt’s Creek co-stars Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, who worked alongside O’Hara for years.

Dan Levy took to Instagram Friday evening to share a moving tribute to the actress who played his on-screen mother, Moira Rose. “What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years,” Dan Levy wrote.
The 42-year-old actor and show creator reflected on O’Hara’s deep connection to his family. “Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family,” he continued.
Dan Levy’s tribute captured the profound sense of loss felt by those who knew her. “It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it,” he wrote. “I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her.”
Eugene Levy, who co-created Schitt’s Creek with his son and worked with O’Hara for more than five decades, released a statement expressing his devastation. “Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today,” Eugene Levy said. “I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years.”
The elder Levy detailed their extraordinary partnership across multiple projects. “From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her,” he continued.
Both tributes emphasized the personal nature of their relationships with O’Hara. Eugene Levy concluded his statement by extending condolences to O’Hara’s family, including her husband, Bo Welch, and their sons, Matthew and Luke.

O’Hara’s agency, CAA, confirmed she died at her home in Los Angeles’s Brentwood area. First responders were called to her residence around 5 a.m. Friday, after she experienced difficulty breathing. She was transported to a hospital in serious condition before being pronounced dead hours later.
The Canadian-born actress became a household name through iconic roles in Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and Schitt’s Creek. She won two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards throughout her career.
Schitt’s Creek made history in 2020 when it swept all the comedy categories at the 72nd Primetime Emmys. The show ran for six seasons from 2015 to 2020, following the wealthy Rose family as they adjusted to life in a small town after losing their fortune.

Sarah Levy, Eugene’s daughter, who also appeared on Schitt’s Creek, shared her own tribute on Instagram. “This one cuts deep,” she wrote. “What an honor it has been to know and work with and love Catherine O’Hara.”
Jennifer Robertson, who played Jocelyn Schitt on the series, told Page Six: “Being in Catherine O’Hara’s orbit was a beautiful, magical gift.”
O’Hara’s death has also prompted tributes from other co-stars, including Macaulay Culkin, who played her son in “Home Alone.” “Mama. I thought we had time,” Culkin wrote. “I wanted more.”
The actress is survived by her husband and their two sons. A private celebration of life will be held by the family.
