Coco Gauff is speaking out after she was criticized for a recent fashion campaign for Miu Miu
Commenters had opinions about her natural hair
"Minimal is beautiful,” she told followers in a TikTok. "Do what you want to do because people are going to hate on you regardless"
Coco Gauff is hitting back after hearing criticism regarding her appearance in a recent photo shoot. The tennis star, 22, took to TikTok on Wednesday, April 8 to address the response to her hair in a new campaign for Miu Miu’s Vivant handbag."I did my everyday hair and makeup because that was personally the point," Gauff said in the eight-minute-long video. "My 4C hair is good enough for a high-fashion brand like Miu Miu to promote one of their newest launches. So if my hair is good enough for that, then yours is good enough to do whatever you need it to do."She added that she avoids sleek, "slicked-back" hairstyles to prevent damage, and chose instead to be natural for the campaign. In the photos, shot by her social media manager and approved by the Italian fashion house, Gauff wears a red polo shirt, a blue skirt and totes the sought-after leather bag.
However, some commenters shared that they felt the 2023 US Open winner’s hair looked unkempt and not professional for the luxury campaign.Gauff — who has been an outspoken advocate for mental health — had other thoughts.

"Minimal is beautiful,” she said. "Do what you want to do because people are going to hate on you regardless."Gauff added, “To all the young Black girls out there who have kinky hair like me, do what you want to do with your hair,” she said. “At the end of the day, people who hate on your appearance and hate on the way that you look have something deeply insecure about themselves. The only reason people comment on people’s looks, especially people who present themselves in their most natural sense, have something deeply wrong with them.”
Last month, amid making the final at the Miami Open, Gauff opened up about battling “imposter syndrome.”"I have to believe that I belong where I am. I think sometimes I can get imposter syndrome," Gauff said while speaking with reporters. "Even when they're saying my accomplishments during the warm up, it doesn't feel like me."She added, “My coaches have been reminding me, like, 'Remember who you are,' and 'You're a good player,' " she said during a press conference. "They've been putting that into my head. There are moments I believe it and there are moments I don't, so I'm just trying to believe it more."
