Clemson gets destroyed, embarrassed in Lane Kiffin’s LSU debut

Clemson has suffered plenty of painful losses during Dabo Swinney’s long run as head coach, but nothing quite like what unfolded Saturday night.

The Tigers’ 51-10 defeat at LSU officially became the largest loss of Swinney’s tenure, surpassing every previous setback since he took over the program in 2008.

That alone makes the season opener difficult to dismiss as simply one bad night.

Clemson was beaten by 41 points and overwhelmed statistically on both sides of the football. LSU finished with 644 total yards compared to just 145 for Clemson, while the first-down margin was an equally staggering 38-8.

For a program accustomed to competing on the national stage, those numbers stand out as much as the final score.

The offense never established any consistency. Christopher Vizzina started at quarterback before Tait Reynolds received an opportunity later in the game, but Clemson struggled regardless of who was behind center.

Defensively, the Tigers had just one sack and one tackle for loss as LSU repeatedly found room to operate.

Sam Leavitt hurt Clemson in multiple ways, throwing for 230 yards while adding 113 rushing yards. Dilin Jones also eclipsed 100 yards on the ground, and Winston Watkins Jr. produced a 110-yard receiving performance.

Clemson did create one early opportunity when Ashton Hampton intercepted a pass on LSU’s opening possession, eventually leading to a Nolan Hauser field goal. David Eziomume later scored the Tigers’ only touchdown.

Those moments proved to be rare positives in an otherwise one-sided night.

The result also continues an unusual trend for a program that once made fast starts almost routine. Clemson has now dropped four consecutive season openers and five of its last six.

One loss will not determine an entire season, but this was not an ordinary defeat.

For Swinney and Clemson, the challenge now is making sure the worst loss of his coaching career remains an isolated low point rather than the beginning of something more troubling.
