Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy, and claims he owes more than $3.45 million to creditors, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
Rice, who filed in the Northern District of Texas bankruptcy court, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which allows “individuals who have financial difficulty preventing them from paying their debts and who are willing to allow their non-exempt property to be used to pay their creditors,” according to the filing.
According to the court documents, Rice’s largest creditor is owed $979,837 as part of a civil settlement related to the March 2024 multi-car accident on a Dallas highway that he and another driver caused, which injured four people.
Rice, 26, also owes an additional combined $650,000 to the three other victims in the accident, as well as $200,000 to his former girlfriend Dacoda Jones, who filed a civil suit against him in February following an alleged domestic dispute.

The North Texas native listed $677,054 in total personal property assets and $3.46 million in liabilities, with assets including jewelry and his Super Bowl LVIII ring, which is valued at $160,000.
The latter is being used as collateral with his attorney, Thomas McMurray, whom Rice owes $185,226.45, according to filing.
Earlier this year, Rice served 30 days in a Dallas jail after violating the terms of his probation tied to the crash.

Rice and a friend were driving at speeds up to 120 mph at about 6:30 p.m. on March 30, 2024 when they “lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles,” police said at the time.

Six cars were involved in the accident. A dashcam later showed Rice and others involved in causing the accident walking down the shoulder of North Central Expressway and leaving the scene before authorities arrived.
Rice, who underwent knee surgery as well this past summer, is in the final year of his rookie contract, and is due $1.635 million in base salary and a $430,949 signing bonus.
He returned to action on Sunday, where he had seven catches for 53 yards and scored a touchdown against the Denver Broncos. He had been out for two weeks with a hamstring injury.
Rice could earn a big payday next season if he stays healthy and the Chiefs secure him for a one-year deal with the franchise tag, per The Athletic.
