Evelyn Hockstein / Getty ImagesAs I’m sure everybody remembers, 2022 was a seriously depressing time to be on the internet, thanks to the incredibly messy and distressing Amber Heard and Johnny Depp defamation trial. For the sake of everybody’s sanity, it’s probably not worth going over all of the nitty-gritty details again, but the bottom line is that Johnny filed a defamation lawsuit against Amber after she wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post in 2018 entitled: “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” The piece, which was less than 1,000 words long, called for there to be more support for women who had survived violence.

Europa Press Entertainment / Getty ImagesWhile the article never mentioned Amber’s ex-husband, Johnny, by name, she reflected on how she’d become “a public figure representing domestic abuse” two years earlier, which is when she’d filed for a divorce from him and obtained a temporary restraining order after claiming he'd been “verbally and physically abusive” toward her throughout their relationship.

When filing the defamation lawsuit, Johnny denied that he’d been abusive toward Amber, and he maintained this throughout the trial. Notably, this was the second time that Johnny had taken the domestic violence allegations to court, having previously filed to sue British tabloid the Sun for libel after he was called a “wife beater” in an article. That case went to trial in 2020, with Amber testifying on behalf of the Sun that Johnny had been abusive throughout their relationship. Johnny ended up losing the case after a judge ruled that there was enough evidence to support the publication’s decision to call him a “wife beater.”

The six-week trial took place in Virginia, and the state’s laws allowed for the whole thing to be livestreamed and watched by the public, which secured it a captive audience across the globe.

Jim Watson / Getty ImagesIn fact, how accessible the case was ended up coming under scrutiny as Depp v. Heard became a trial by TikTok, with social media users found to be editing audio snippets from the testimonies and turning tearful allegations of abuse into comedy videos. It was argued that the fanfare of the case was overshadowing the severity of Heard’s allegations, with her distressing accounts of sexual, physical, and emotional violence turned into public ridicule.

Brendan Smialowski / Getty ImagesThe incredibly high-profile trial came to an end when the jury of five men and two women ruled largely in Johnny’s favor. They ordered Amber to pay him a total of $15 million; $10 million in compensatory damages, and another $5 million in punitive damages after finding her liable on three counts in the op-ed.

While her name never officially came up in either lawsuit, nor was she called to testify in either the Virginia or UK case, British model Cara Delevingne did find herself at the center of some of the drama surrounding allegations about Amber’s personal relationships.

Pascal Le Segretain / Getty ImagesFor example, during a pre-trial deposition, one of Amber's former friend’s ex-husband Josh Drew testified that he believed Amber had an affair with Cara while still married to Johnny. He also claimed that the two women had had a threesome with Elon Musk at Johnny’s LA home. Josh alleged that he hadn’t personally witnessed any of this, and his claims were based on what he’d been told.

David M. Benett / Getty ImagesWhile Elon and Amber dated for around a year between 2017 and 2018 — after Amber’s split from Johnny — Elon publicly denied the allegation that he’d ever spent the night with Cara and Amber, saying at the time: “Cara and I are friends, but we've never been intimate."

During Cara’s appearance on the Louis Theroux Podcast this week, host Louis outwardly asked: “Are we going to mention the Johnny Depp thing?” to which Cara replied: “Sure. What part of it?”

The Louis Theroux Podcast / Spotify / Viayoutube.com“He was driven crazy by the idea that Amber might be sleeping with you,” Louis said, and Cara explained: “Am I meant to comment? It's because we did a movie together, and it was called London Fields. He was also doing the movie. I think he was pretty driven crazy by jealousy. Nothing was happening at that point. Later, after they divorced, it had, I suppose.”

Christopher Polk / Getty ImagesWhen quizzed on her use of “I suppose,” Cara confirmed: “I don’t suppose, I know. Yeah.” When Louis asked if she and Amber had had an “entanglement,” Cara asked what the word means, questioning if it was “bad.” Louis explained: “I think it means a relatively short-lived liaison or series of physical encounters.”

Gisela Schober / Getty Images“We were close for a long time, and then when they were going through the divorce, yeah, we were entangled, I suppose,” Cara then agreed, before revealing that they were never exclusive as she stated: “But she was also entangled with other people.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cara shut down speculation that she is polyamorous, and revealed that she wants a family of her own “really badly.” She said: “I definitely don't want to have kids to fix anything, but I think it will really heal parts of myself that have a tough time having sympathy for the kid I was. Because I've done a lot of work with that and imagining a little kid going through the things I saw or went through, I couldn't imagine that.”
