Singer Kelly Clarkson sparked controversy online after she took aim at a business in Brooklyn.

Clarkson, 44, took to X to detail her experience at Art of Play, a home goods and bookstore selling unique trinkets and items. She revealed that she was “looked at as if [she] couldn’t afford’ the items in the store and was “told [the employee] could find something comparable” for her. She remarked that the employee was “an idiot” who lost a “huge sale.” The New York-based store clapped back at Clarkson on the shop’s Instagram story, where they reposted a positive review that credited the story with being welcoming and treating customers with “such genuine kindness.”

They added that the store offers “unique treasures” and that they enjoy “connecting with the wonderful people there,” with the store leaving the user “smiling and wanting to come back.” This comes after Clarkson compared herself to Taylor Swift at a Las Vegas show.

“But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman,” continued Clarkson’s critical post on social media, “For sure, check it out.”

In the film “Pretty Woman,” Julia Roberts’ character is turned away from a designer store, with the employees assuming she cannot afford the luxury items being sold.

Art of Play shared another positive review, reposting an Instagram story where the user wrote “For what it’s worth, I think @artofplay is a great store!” and posted a photo of the shop’s exterior.

In the shop’s Instagram comment section, critics lashed out.

“Is it ok if I come to your store to look, or is your space only for the uber wealthy? Like richer than Kelly Clarkson kinda wealthy? Maybe you only cater to billionaires??” wrote one user.

“Is it true that you discriminate against people based on how you perceive them? I just read that Kelly Clarkson was treated very badly in your store. Big mistake!” added another.

“Clearly no one should come to this store, unless you wanna be discriminated against,” remarked a third.

On X, users responded to Clarkson’s post in defense of the American Idol star. They were quick to point out that all shoppers should be treated with dignity and respect–without the assumption they cannot afford a product.

“People saying “maybe he didn’t know who Kelly Clarkson was” are missing the point that they should be treating their customers like everyone is Kelly Clarkson,” reasoned one user.

“The lesson Kelly Clarkson is conveying is not that she is special. She is saying treat everyone well because you never know who you are talking to,” added another supporter.

“I have spent most of my life in sales, and the number one lesson I have learned is that you have no idea what anyone has in their wallet,” wrote a third.
